A new offshore nacelle and assembly factory in Szczecin

In October 2022, Vestas announced its’ plan to establish a new offshore nacelle and assembly factory in Szczecin, Poland to meet rapid offshore growth. The Vestas Szczecin Factory will assemble nacelles and hubs for Vestas’ flagship offshore wind turbine, the V236-15.0 MW and is expected to start operations in 2025 and create 700 direct jobs. The factory will support domestic and global demand and will play a crucial role in supporting Poland's’ offshore wind market and industry.

Vestas is honoured to welcome HM The King of Denmark and multiple senior Polish and Danish politicians at the site of its announced offshore assembly factory in Szczecin, Poland, on 2 February 2024.

King Frederik of Denmark and other guests will witness the laying of the foundation stone ceremony celebrating Vestas’ investments in Poland.

With two announced offshore wind factories in Szczecin, Vestas is proud to support Poland’s energy transition and Europe’s energy security.

"Offshore wind has great prospects in Poland, and Vestas is proud to support the country in maximising its opportunities. The new nacelle and assembly factory will leverage Vestas’ expertise and experience to create hundreds of direct and thousands of indirect jobs in the Szczecin area. Offshore wind is headed toward a rapid growth trajectory, and Vestas intends to lead the development of a sustainable supply chain that can deliver the scale needed”

1,140 MW Baltic Power Offshore Wind Project

When the factory was announced in 2022, it came in the wake of Vestas being awarded preferred supplier status with Baltic Power Sp. z o.o, a joint venture between PKN Orlen S.A. and Northland Power Inc., to supply turbines for the 1,140 MW Baltic Power Offshore Wind Project in Poland. The project became a firm order in September 2023 and Vestas will consequently deliver, install, and commission 76 V236-15.0 MW wind turbines, and support the foundation designing.

The service & maintenance agreement (SMA) is for 15 years and include a full-service contract (AOM 5000). The service harbour for the project will be provided by Baltic Power in Łeba, and with the O&M phase intended to run mainly with local workforce, Vestas plans to expand its local service footprint.

Vestas and ArcelorMittal come together to reduce emissions for Baltic Power Project

Vestas recently announced a partnership with ArcelorMittal to launch a low-emission steel offering that significantly reduces emission from the production of wind towers. The top section of 52 towers out of 76 in totalwill be made with low-emission steel.

"Poland is transforming its energy system and is a promising wind energy market with good wind conditions both onshore and offshore. Poland has a highly skilled labour force and growing wind industry that can become an offshore hub for the Baltic Region and the rest of Europe"

A leader in offshore wind

As Vestas embarks on this journey of becoming a leader in offshore wind, supporting Europe's build-out of offshore wind parks, Vestas announced in January 2024 plans to establish a second factory in Szczecin, Poland, a blade factory, which is planned to be located at a site in northern Szczecin, close to the nacelle and assembly factory. The factory is planned to produce blades for Vestas’ flagship offshore wind turbine, the V236-15.0 MW, and is expected to start operations in 2026, creating more than 1,000 direct jobs.

“Vestas intends to lead the development of a sustainable supply chain in Europe that can deliver the scale needed to meet the expected growth in demand for offshore wind. Our plans for two new offshore factories in Poland underline that Europe can spur wind industry investments and green jobs with the right long-term policy commitments for offshore wind projects,” says Tommy Rahbek Nielsen, Vestas COO.

The new factories are planned to support European and to some extent global demand, playing a crucial role in supporting Poland and the European offshore wind market and industry. With the two new factories in Szczecin together with Vestas’ already existing footprint, Vestas is expected to soon employ more than 2,500 people in Poland.
