MHI Vestas Offshore Wind Celebrates Aberdeen Bay Inauguration

Aberdeen, September 7, 2018

Offshore wind executives are meeting today in Aberdeen, Scotland as MHI Vestas celebrates inauguration of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre with Vattenfall.

MHI Vestas, along with project developer Vattenfall, is celebrating the opening of offshore wind’s latest demonstration project, the 93.2 MW European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC). The project underscores the emergence of Scotland as a burgeoning centre for offshore wind innovation.

The EOWDC consists of 11 MHI Vestas V164 turbines, two of which are operating at 8.8 MW, claiming the top spot as the most powerful turbines operating anywhere in the world.

The offshore wind park, located in Aberdeen Bay, is Scotland’s largest offshore wind test and demonstration facility and will trial next generation technology, including pairing the world’s largest turbines with suction bucket foundations, an industry first.

"We are exceptionally proud that Scotland is now home to the world’s most powerful wind turbines in operation,” said MHI Vestas CEO, Philippe Kavafyan. “This project is the outcome of forward-thinking energy policy and a strong commitment to innovation that we see across the entire UK market. The learnings from this development project promise to serve us well in future UK offshore wind projects.”

MHI Vestas Chief Operations Officer, Flemming Ougaard, said, “The EOWDC will provide valuable insights on innovative technologies in offshore wind – technologies that will advance the offshore wind sector. We’re very proud to have partnered with Vattenfall in bringing the EOWDC to life.”

Nine of the 11 V164 turbines will operate at 8.4 MW, and two will run at 8.8 MW. Overall, the 11 wind turbines at the EOWDC will supply enough clean energy to power more than 79,000 homes.
