Introducing our Vestas New Zealand office
Our office and warehouse in New Zealand is located closely behind the Palmerston North International Airport which is on the north east side of the city. Presently we have a small team of seven employees working from the main office and two employees in the warehouse. The office has lovely views of the Te Apiti and Tararua wind farms which are situated at either side of the Manawatu Gorge. Between the two wind farms there stands a total of 189 Vestas turbines ranging from NM72 (1.65MW), V47 (660 KW) and V90 (3 MW) turbines. Due to the close proximity to Te Apiti and Tararua all of the NZ office and warehouse staff has climbed a turbine – or in some cases took the lift…
A little history
The first Vestas turbines installed in New Zealand were 48 V47 on the Tararua Ranges in March 1999; an additional 55 were installed in 2004. Since then, Vestas’ installed 55 NM72 MHW turbines on Te Apiti. By 2007 a further 31 V90 turbines were installed on Tararua and 29 V80 turbines on Whitehill. The current total of Vestas turbines is 218, producing 309 MW. In January 2010, the construction of 12 V90 3mw turbines started on the Maherinangi Wind Farm, which is situated approx 60km from Dunedin, Otago on the south island.
In 2006, the office was first set up in Keith Street consisting of one manager, Tech Support and a part-time office administrator, and one warehouse coordinator. By April 2008 we moved to Valor drive, with a staff of three, NZ Manager, Administration Manager, Tech Support, Service Assistant, and of course the two warehouse guys keeping our sites supplied with stock and parts.

What’s it like to work here
The local office has a quiet and laid back atmosphere. Due to the proximity to the wind farms, there is a great deal of interaction between all functions in the company including sales, service, finance, tech support and projects.
Traditionally site technicians, office and warehouse staff get together every December to celebrate Christmas by completing some all day activities, e.g. Fishing, White water rafting or the like.
Local benefits
Palmerston North city is a busy university town with no traffic problems, good cycle ways and affordable housing. Outdoor activities such as hunting, river and sea fishing, skiing and hiking are also very close.
Sights and surroundings
Palmerston North (known locally as Palmy) is situated on the lower part of the north island, in a region called Manawatu. Palmerston North is host to the Te Manawa museum, art gallery and interactive science centre, the NZ Rugby museum, and the Regent on Broadway Arts Theatre has had some world famous names on its stage. Jet boating on the Manawatu river, a trip on a steam engine or wine tasting at the Pohangina Valley estate are also some of the leisure activities possible in this city. There is always plenty do in the Manawatu.
