Introducing the Vestas Nacelles Italia office

Vestas Nacelles Italia is located in Taranto, the third-largest continental city in southern Italy. Due to its geographical position on the Mediterranean Sea, the city has been a strategic point of interest since ancient times. Taranto is now a very important commercial and military port. Vestas Nacelles Italia is a production facility where the nacelles models V52 and V90 are assembled. Currently, approximately 170 employees work at this location. We are located in the industrial part of the city, close to the interstate to the airport in Bari. Besides Vestas, many other factories are also located here.

A little history

In 1998, IWT (Italian Wind Technology) was founded in Taranto from a joint venture between Finmeccanica and Vestas Wind Systems A/S. In those years, the production facility was used to assemble the V42 and V44 models. In 1999, production for the V47-660 kW started. In 2001, Vestas acquired 100% of IWT. In 2002, the smallest model of Vestas’ line, the V52-850 kW, was assembled in Taranto. In 2005, IWT became the three Italian subsidiaries Vestas Nacelles, Vestas Blades, and Vestas Italia. In 2008, Vestas Nacelles Italia celebrated its 10-year anniversary and the launch of the first V-90 3 MW.

Departments

The departments represented at this location are: Production, Production Engineering, Supply Chain, People & Culture, Logistics, Quality, Local Sourcing and Business Performance Management.

What’s it like to work here

Working here is very interesting thanks to the frequent visits from colleagues from other Vestas locations around the world. Furthermore, the location of the factory is close to the port and only 10 minutes from downtown Taranto and the waterfront.

Local benefits

Employees have the advantage of being close to the city centre and its shops and restaurants where they can enjoy a typically Taranto seafood dinner. There are some restaurants where special prices are offered to Vestas employees, and there are annual employee events such as soccer tournaments, dinners, and parties. This year, we celebrated 365 days without factory injuries with a big party for the employees and their families.

Sights and surroundings

Even though Vestas Nacelles Italia is located in an industrial area, it is really close to downtown Taranto and the historical part of the city. Taranto, in fact, is one of the oldest cities in Italy, built in 706 BC by Dorian Greek immigrants as a Spartan colony. Greek and Roman artefacts are preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto where visitors can admire the magnificent findings from ancient times such as sculptures, ceramics, jewels and remarkable golden objects.
Downtown Taranto is filled with a variety of shops, cafés, and restaurants. All of this is set against an amazing view of the two seas. In fact, Taranto is called “the city of the two seas.” There is the Mar Grande (Big Sea) where the commercial port is located, and Mar Piccolo (Small Sea). At the end of the 19th century, a channel was excavated to allow the military ships to enter the Mar Piccolo harbour, and the ancient city become an island connected to downtown by a bridge, located just in front of the Hispanic fort called “Castello Aragonese.”
Visitors who come to visit the city during the summer will enjoy some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, along the coast to Lecce.
Close to Taranto is Alberobello, the Capital of the Trulli. Trulli are unique buildings with white conical rooftops, which gave the town international recognition – Alberobello has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site.
