Why green growth?

20th century growth was based on cheap fossil fuels, expansion of land under cultivation at the expense of forests/biodiversity, significant degradation of water and soil resources, and largely unregulated exploitation of oceans. In a world whose population is likely to reach nine billion by 2050, this model of resource-intensive growth is unsustainable.

We therefore need to act now to lay the foundations for a green economic transformation that will lead to a resource-efficient model of economic growth.  Green growth is the only way to lift billions out of poverty through expanded economic activity, while at the same time lowering the impact of that growth on the planet’s finite resources.
