Global economy, global challenges
The first G20 Leaders Summit was held on November 15, 2008, in Washington, DC. The success of the first meeting paved the way for future summits.
On April 2, 2009, in London and on September 25, 2009, in Pittsburgh, the G20 continued to tackle the financial crisis, agreeing to a $5 trillion stimulus package and following through on previously made commitments. With these meetings, the G20 firmly established itself at the center of global economic discussion.
Why the G20 Summit?
In Washington, DC, by pursuing globally coordinated policies, the G20 helped prevent the further collapse of the international financial system in the wake of the United States’ subprime mortgage meltdown and the subsequent Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, as it laid the groundwork for reforms to reduce global volatility.
The G20 Cannes Summit is the sixth time world leaders gather to discuss financial and economic policies.
